2025-2026 COVID-19 VIRGINIA STANDARDS: Need to know
Yesterday, on 9/11/2025, the Virginia State Health Commissioner released an updated Standard of Practice for COVID-19 Administration due to the delayed CDC Advisory. Here is the information available so far:
On August 27, the FDA approved the updated 2025–26 COVID-19 vaccines for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as for certain people under 65 with at least one underlying condition that increases their risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes. The ACIP is scheduled to meet on September 18–19, 2025, to discuss and recommend the 2025–2026 COVID-19 vaccine guidelines for the CDC’s Immunization Schedule. Meanwhile, challenges have arisen for patients seeking the vaccine at pharmacies.
To address this, a Statewide Standing Order has been issued, authorizing pharmacists to administer the vaccine to adults in accordance with the FDA’s indications. This order will help adults access the COVID-19 vaccine at pharmacies throughout the Commonwealth. However, minors and adults aged 18–64 without an underlying condition should consult their healthcare provider, as pharmacists cannot administer the vaccine to these groups without medical authorization.
To summarize: If you are 65 or older, you can receive the 2025–2026 COVID-19 vaccine at your pharmacy without a prescription. If you are 18–64 with one qualifying underlying condition, you can also get the vaccine at a pharmacy without a prescription. However, individuals under 18 or adults aged 18–64 without an underlying condition will require a prescription to receive the vaccine.
One Hanson Pharmacy is currently administering 2025-2026 Covid-19 vaccines, in addition to 2025-2026 Flu vaccines. Walk-ins are welcome and you can also call to schedule an appointment.
